Last Sunday we began a worship series about Messy Church.

A group from our church spent the summer studying Messy Church as an opportunity for us to connect with our neighbors who are unchurched or dechurched. Messy Church is a form of Fresh Expressions churches, or a form of church for our changing culture, established primarily for the benefit of those who are not part of any church. Messy Church is creative, Christ-centered, and meant for all ages. It’s unlike any church you’ve ever experienced before!

Last Sunday we reflected on the truth that our church is wonderful. Our music, our liturgies, our customs, and our traditions are all the things that we love about our church and congregation! But, more often than not, these parts of church are our preferences of church, and not the core essentials of what it means to be a church. The essentials of church are people, prayer, scripture/story, a response, and a sense of belonging – that’s it! What if we could keep those essentials but craft a fresh expression of church for our neighbors who might never want to walk through our doors on a Sunday morning? That’s the idea behind Messy Church!

This coming Sunday we will continue talking about Messy Church. I’ll share the theology and mission behind Messy Church, and we’ll begin to understand why this opportunity might be the right direction for our congregation in 2025 and beyond.
