Happy New Year Church!
As we ring in the new year, we are reminded of the God who makes all thinks new. New Year’s Day brings up a sense of urgency for some – what will my goals be? What am I doing with my life? For others, the day can make us feel a little older, a little more fragile, and a little wearier.
But we worship a God of grace and love who is active in our lives and the world. God’s Spirit is renewing and reweaving the nature of the world, slowly and carefully bringing the kin-dom to its fruition. 2nd Corinthians 5:17 tells us “if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; look, new things have come into being!” As we enter a new year, remember that through the grace of Christ, you have been made new. The Holy Spirit is at work in you, in me, and in our church, helping us to grow in love and service to all God’s beloved people.
Each New Year, the founder of Methodism – John Wesley – would host a Covenant Renewal service with his brothers and sisters in Christ. The goal was to worship, pray, and renew our covenant with God in response to the grace of God given to us through Christ. That service included this prayer. I invite you to pray this prayer in the first few days of the New Year. Remember that in Christ, you are a new creation. Offer yourself, your time, and your energy to God. May God guide and bless us in the year ahead.
