July 17, 2024 Weekly Update

Last week we began a new worship series entitled “Worship with Rejoicing.” A worship series about worship? Yeah, quirky, right? In the summer when our typical routines become relaxed, reflecting on the rhythm and routine of worship is helpful. It reminds us why we gather week in and week out. And as the world feels chaotic and painful, remembering the joy of worship helps us navigate the troubled waters we face each week.

Have you ever felt disdain or looks of judgment when you’ve worshiped? In our scripture last week, Michal looked at King David “with disdain” as he processed and danced with the Ark of the Covenant. He joyfully entered the city with the symbolic ark, the presence of God. In college, when I sang in a ministry choir. I remember being the only singer left standing as other singers knelt at the altar and spoke in tongues or prayed for others. Even though I was singing and still connecting with God, I wasn’t doing what everyone else was doing. I felt the looks of disdain and judgment – “Oh yeah, he’s a Methodist.” I did not feel like I was part of the gathering, and it was difficult for me to muster joy in the moment.

King David made mistakes, and he followed his impulses in the wrong direction at times. But he viewed his whole life as an offering to God. That helped him experience joy even in difficult times. How might you, like David, incorporate joyful and wholehearted worship into your daily lives? With a mid-morning prayer of gratitude? Maybe a dance break between emails, phone calls, or afternoon chores? How might you express your faith through action and celebration?

Next Sunday we’ll reflect on a time when David tried to follow his impulses, but God pulled him in another direction. I look forward to seeing you this week – either in-person or online!

Blessings,

Pastor Jared
