December 8, 2021 Weekly Update
Have you seen the film, “It’s a Wonderful Life” ? It’s a 1946 classic, and we can usually spot it on television during the holidays. George Bailey, pillar of the community and a ‘David’ figure to the greedy ‘Goliath’ of Mr. Potter, finds himself in desperate times. He and his co-workers are missing a lot of money, and their family’s banking business is in jeopardy. Through an encounter with Clarence, the angel in training, George moves from fear and anxiety to confusion, and finally to reconciliation and joy as he rediscovers the blessings of home and community. Now I made you want to watch it, right?!?
“It’s a Wonderful Life” reminds me of the tension between our worship service last week, and our upcoming worship service this Sunday. Last week we reflected on the Fear of Home. For some of us, coming home for Christmas is not something to look forward to. Home has been riddled with lack of support, abuse, conflict, and struggle. Like George, we fear going home because of what awaits us there.
But this coming Sunday, we turn to the Joy of Home. We will be introduced to home that sustains us and cares for us – helping us to experience joy even in dark times. This is the Joy that George Bailey ultimately discovered when his community surrounded and supported him. May we be that kind of community – a home for our neighbors – that helps them discover the Joy of the Christ child all year long.
We look forward to seeing you in worship this Sunday – either in person or online! And remember, you can always catch an edited and condensed version of the worship service on Monday’s after lunchtime on our YouTube channel!
Advent blessings,
Pastor Jared
